COLERAIN, NC – Ronald Elbert Jernigan, age 69, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020, surrounded by his family, at his home.

Mr. Ronald was born on March 11, 1950 to the late Starkey and Mattie Jernigan in Ahoskie, NC. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Ronald cherished his family especially the time he spent with his grandchildren, babysitting them during their summer breaks. Ronald worked in maintenance for the Department of Transportation of North Carolina for many years before retiring. Ronald enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and cooking fish for those family get-togethers. He was a huge sports fanatic, pulling for the Atlanta Braves and the Dallas Cowboys. Ronald was a quiet, gentle soul that adored his Elm Grove community, the township where he was born and raised. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by all that knew him.

Left to cherish Ronald’s memory is his loving wife, Christie, son, Brian K. Jernigan and wife Noelle of Williamston; two daughters, Melissa L. Jernigan of Colerain, and Amy Pierce and husband Phillip of Jamesville; brother, Paul Jernigan and significant other, Terry Pierce of Colerain; two sisters, Linda Eileen Elks of Grimesland, and Louise J. Jernigan and husband Joseph of Colerain; grandson, William Joel Pierce of Jamesville; granddaughter, Caroljean Rose Pierce of Jamesville; along with a host of extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 19, 2020, from 6:30 pm until 8:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, and other times at the home.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020, at 11:30 am at the Elm Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Preston Jernigan officiating.

Christy…know that I love you, I’ve loved you & Ronald…even, way back, in the Sunday after church, Sheep’s Landing, water-skiing days, from Ronald’s fishing boat (God, forbid…can you imagine how painful that would be, skiing today, 50 years later?). Ronald grew up, just down the road from us. Of course, when Jannie & I were youngans, we thought he was grown, until you two, started dating. What I will remember about Ronald…a man with a quiet, gentle nature…always smiling & saying something funny, to make you laugh. He was just a salt-of-the-earth good person, due to his lifetime Christian upbringing. For those, too young to remember…Mr. Starkey, his daddy, was a God-fearing deacon, a moral compass & a pillar of strength in Elm Grove Baptist Church. Ms. Mattie, his mamma, had the heart-of-teacher, spent her life teaching the Bible, in words, country people could understand. My mamma dearly loved her. I had the privilege of staying with Ms.Mattie, in her latter years. I loved her, too…but not her chickens. Christy, I realize, you know all these things I’m saying, already. I’m saying them for your children & your children’s children. I want them always, to honor & love, the God-fearing legacy, from which they came. The days, weeks & years to come will not be easy. I still grieve & cry for Jannie almost, everyday. I have to remind myself…this is God’s will…God’s wisedom…I love you, Christy.
