AHOSKIE, NC – Roy Earl Swain, age 82, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2023, in Hertford County, North Carolina. He was born on November 28, 1940, in Bertie County, North Carolina to C.W. and Sarah Swain. He was one of 4 children. Roy was a dedicated husband to wife Janice for 62 years and a loving father of 2 children.

He spent many fulfilling years as a skilled mechanic, working with Charles H. Jenkins until his retirement. After retiring, he joined the team at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, where he selflessly served for over 13 years. Roy’s dedication and expertise were greatly appreciated by all who crossed his path. Outside of work, Roy had a deep love for his family, especially his only grandchild Matthew. Roy was a member of Hickory Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. His interests included fishing, flying remote control airplanes, riding his motorcycle, and engaging in friendly card games with his dear friends. Roy’s wonderful sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around him. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Roy was preceded in death by his father, C.W. Swain, his mother, Sarah King Swain, his sisters, Janice Hughes and Nancy Banks, and his brother, L.B. Swain. He leaves behind cherished memories in the hearts of his beloved wife, Janice; his daughter Delores Davis of Murrells Inlet, SC; his son David Earl Swain and wife Susan of Wilson, NC: his grandson Matthew Swain, and his nieces and nephew, Dianne Gilleland (Bill), Darlene Futrell (Winston), Randy Hughes (Mitzi), and Lori Cooke.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 16, 2023, from 1:00 pm until 1:45 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC with a celebration of life service following in the chapel at 2:00 pm with  Reverend Jim Skipper officiating. Burial will follow at Stoney Creek Cemetery, Ahoskie, NC.

Roy was my very good friend. I bought my first model airplane from him and he taught me to fly. He is now flying higher than ever and with not a care or concern about battery failure or running out of fuel. Fly high my good friend.
