Ruby Jernigan Brandel, 98, of Little Valley, CA died April 26, 2009 at the Herington Municipal Hospital in Kansas.

She was born October 16, 1910 in Aulander to Samuel D. and Ara C. (Hall) Jernigan.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck. The Reverend Jim Heckathorn will be presiding.

A viewing for family and friends will be held before the service at the cemetery.

Ruby’s time in Little Valley, CA was spent running the restaurant and tavern, volunteering for all community activities, and holding various positions at the Wayside Garden Club. Her baking and her plant kindness are remembered to this day throughout the town. She was a master of many trades. She worked the fields in her youth, and worked in a hosiery factory as a teenager. She later worked as a nurse’s aide and a seamstress on commercial machinery. She could cook and bake without recipes, and could make a dress without a pattern. Her final years were spent in Herington Municipal Hospital in Kansas near her daughter’s home.

Ruby was preceded in death by her first husband, Bernard Glidewell, Sr. in 1970; her second husband, Henry Brandel in 1991; a son, Bernard Glidewell, Jr. in 1954; a brother, Sam Jernigan, Jr.; and sisters, Mabel Avery, Gertrude Harrell, and Myrtle Dunlap.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hartley of Herington, KS; sisters, Mildred Lockamy of Kinston and Grace Jackson of Colonial Heights, VA; grandsons, Lance Larson and wife Shawna and Howard Adams and wife Sandy of Wilson, KS; granddaughters, Faith Willey and husband Harwood of Newport News, VA and Debbie Reyore and husband Randy of Saranac, NY; great-grandsons, Justin Scott, Phillip Reynolds, Hank Larson, and Kenneth Willey and wife Rachel; great-granddaughters, Leslie Scott and Megan Scott; great-great-grandsons, Ashland Willey and Alexander Willey; and great-great-granddaughters, Deanna Reyore and Abigail Willey.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.
