TARBORO, NC – Sarah Elizabeth Hackney Urton, age 75, of Old County Home Road, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at her home.

Mrs. Urton was born on December 6, 1947 to Albert Hackney and Retha Hopkins Hackney in Halifax County, NC. Sarah Elizabeth was affectionately called Liz by her beloved family. She was a dedicated member of Penders Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Liz enjoyed shopping, trips to the beach, cooking and feeding people. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. She loved her grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. Liz was greatly loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed.

Along with her parents, Liz was preceded in death by her brother, Wilson Hackney.

Liz is survived by her beloved husband, Michael; her daughter, Christy Cooke of Tarboro; her son, Jamey Cooke (Jennifer) of Tarboro; her step-sons, Bryan Urton (Vanessa) of Flagstaff, AZ and Michael Scott Urton (Amy) of Wake Forest; her sister, Margaret H. McKinney of Scotland Neck; four grandsons, Logan Nevins, Ian Urton, Kyle Cooke, and Elijah Urton; two granddaughters, Emma Urton and Adrianna Urton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service – Letchworth Chapel in Scotland Neck.

A celebration of life graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 17, 2023 at Hobgood Cemetery in Hobgood, with Pastor Johnny Hendricks officiating.  The family will also receive friends after the service at lunch at Penders Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Tarboro.

Mike, Jamey, Christy and family…..I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Ms. Liz. I have so many fond memories of her. She was such a very caring person and loved her family fiercely. I believe/hope her and Granny Scott are back together again. Prayers and hugs for all of you.
