AHOSKIE, NC – Shirley Dilday Swain, age 85, passed away on July 25, 2022, at her home with her family by her side.
Mrs. Swain was born in Hertford County, NC, on October 5, 1936, a daughter of the late Oba and Ruby Hill Dilday. Shirley worked for several businesses in Ahoskie including the News Herald, Golden Corral and Entertainment Connection, but mostly she served the town of Ahoskie for 28 years, working as a clerk in the Water Department. She also, along with her husband, Vernon, ran the Earl Theater, known then as Ahoskie Cinema in Ahoskie. She enjoyed many things including cooking and playing golf in her earlier years, but first and foremost in her life was her children, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory is her devoted husband, Vernon Swain, her son, Cullen Swain and wife, Cindy of Goldsboro, NC; grandson, Dustin Swain and wife, Candace of Smithfield, NC; a great granddaughter, Presleigh Swain; a great grandson, Camden Swain; and her sister, Judy Bunch of Chesapeake, VA.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, from 10:00 am until 10:45 am in the fellowship hall of Powellsville Baptist Church, with the celebration of life service to follow at 11:00 am, in the church, with Rev. Matthew Miles officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.

Vernon and family, I have just now seen this and am so, so sorry for your loss. I worked with Shirley at Catherine’s Restaurant and she certainly knew her job perfectly. I also remember nights out with “the gang” when Bela and I were together. God bless all of you as you work your way through this loss…..

Mrs Shirley was one of the most helpful, encouraging, dearest, sweetest people I have ever had the pleasure of calling my friend. My family is truly saddened by Mrs Shirley’s passing.
