Tempie Kitchin Kerr, 34, died Wednesday, December 29, 2010.

A celebration of Tempie’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 2, 2011 at the First Baptist Church of Scotland Neck. Interment will follow at the Baptist Cemetery. The Reverend Doctor Allen Cherry will be presiding.

Tempie was born on September 5, 1976, the daughter of Leland Hodge Kitchin, III and the late Jewel Gray Kitchin, and was raised in Scotland Neck. She graduated from Hobgood Academy in 1994 and from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1998, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and was a member of Phi Beta Pi sorority. Tempie’s love of life was evident through her many, many friendships, her memorable laugh, and her bright spirit. All who knew her will miss her ability to make any event more fun for everyone.

Tempie was preceded in death by her mother, Jewel Gray Kitchin; her maternal grandparents, Walter Jewel Gray and Ola Pulley Gray of Littleton; and her paternal grandfather, Leland Hodge Kitchin, Jr. of Scotland Neck.

She is survived by her husband, John Banks Kerr of Raleigh; father and stepmother, Leland Hodge Kitchin, III and Jean Almand Kitchin of Scotland Neck; her sister and best friend, Julia Kitchin Coyne and husband Charles Williams Coyne of Raleigh; her paternal grandmother, Anne Lovelace Kitchin of Scotland Neck; her aunts, Anne Maria Kitchin Edwards of Roanoke Rapids and Elizabeth Kitchin Bailey and husband Steven Michael Bailey of Hatteras; her uncle, Gordon Palmer Gray of Littleton; and numerous cousins.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, January 1, 2011 at Gallberry, her grandmother’s home, 25576 Highway 125, Scotland Neck.

Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the Tempie Kitchin Kerr Memorial Fund, c/o Southern Bank, P.O. Box 388, Scotland Neck, NC 27874.

Arrangements are being handled by Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.

My heart is broken to see this sad news. I try to keep up with my Hobgood students occasionally and this shocked me. Temple was sweet, quiet, and very smart. she will be missed by so may.
