AHOSKIE, NC – Violet Christine Harrell Williams, age 102, of South Street, passed away on Friday, August 11, 2023 at the ECU Health Roanoke Chowan Hospital of Ahoskie, NC.
Mrs. Williams was born on May 2, 1921 to Edgar and Christine Mobley Harrell in Como, NC. Upon the death of her mother at age 8 and during The Great Depression she and her siblings were placed in foster homes in the area. Amazingly , they were able to stay in touch with one another. Violet was a devoted wife and mother spending her earlier years taking care of her sons. Once her sons graduated from college she went to nursing school and worked in the emergency room at Roanoke Chowan Hospital until her retirement. She was loved by her family and friends and will be deeply missed. Violet loved gardening and caring for her home. Her last wish was to live at home during her final years and was supported by at-home care givers passionately headed by Marie Bell of Windsor.
Along with her parents, Violet was preceded in death by a son, Joe Dwight Williams, and her siblings; Stanley, Johnny, Carl, Irma Hillyard, Fannie Mae, and Gertrude.
Violet is survived by her son, Bennett Williams of Highlands, NC; a grandson, Benjamin Truston Williams of Atlanta, GA; along with many extended family and friends.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 2:00 pm at the Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Rev. Anita Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends during a reception following the service at the funeral home. There will be a private burial at Highland Memorial Gardens.

You are in our prayers.
We loved Aunt Violet.❤️
I loved Aunt Violet so much, and was lucky to have gotten close to her later in life. She loved my children Katie and Alex, and they were always so excited to see her (and to get her treats)…truly an amazing woman and we are so blessed to have had her in our lives. She was like a sister to my grandmother, Sarah, and I always loved hearing about their adventures together. We love you, Aunt Violet!
I worked with Violet in the ER in Ahoskie. She taught me alot and was very encouraging to me when I went back to school to become a physician assistant. I am now retired but still think of her. Rest in peace.
I worked with Violet in the ER in Ahoskie several years ago …she was so kind and such a joy to work with. I have thought about her so many times over the years and remembered the fun times we had at work..RIP sweet Vi.
I worked with Violet in the Emergency Department many years ago at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, 1987-1989. Loved her and her energy! We had so much fun back then, she invited some of us to spend the weekend at her beach house to go fishing, a place and activity she truly enjoyed. Rest in peace, Violet, after 102 years, you’ve more than earned it! Prayers to the family and ones left behind.
We are sorry to see this message. May you each feel God’s love, Peace and comfort as you go through this sad time. Ronnie and Canara Harrell.
