Will “Tony” Gordon Smith, age 84, of Scotland Neck, passed away on March 1, 2019 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC.
He was born in Wayne County on April 17, 1934 to Jiro and Eula Smith. Tony was married to Norma Eason on June 1, 1958 and they enjoyed fifty years of marriage. Tony’s career began early working with the Lance Corporation, traveling the area supplying Lance products. Tony worked with Lance for nearly thirty years, then retiring only to open a used furniture business, Tony’s Trading Post, which he operated for twenty-four years. He recently retired from the furniture business in January 2019. Tony enjoyed playing cards and loved going to auctions.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Eula Butts Smith; his father, Jiro Smith; his wife, Norma Eason Smith, his brothers, J.B., Harold, and Mickey Smith; and his grandson, Phillip Wayne Osborne.
Tony is survived by two daughters, Debra Smith Barber and her husband Gene of Roanoke Rapids and Janet Smith Harrell and her husband Keith of Scotland Neck; his sister, Dorothy Smith Eason; two brothers, Durwood Smith and his wife Donna and Kay Smith and his wife Betty Jo all of LaGrange; two granddaughters, Crystal Shearin and her husband Kirby and Joanna Stanley and her husband Mike; a grandson, Kenny Sherman and his wife Penny; three great-granddaughters, Paige Osborne, Elaina Shearin, and Josie Sherman; and two great-grandsons, Eli Shearin and Gordon Stanley all of Roanoke Rapids.
A visitation will be held Sunday, March 3, 2019 from 7:00-8:30 pm at Letchworth-Sykes Funeral Service in Scotland Neck.
A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck, with the Rev Paul Spradley officiating.
