CLAYTON – William “Bill” Allen Benton, 80, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Monday, January 2, 2023.

Bill was born on August 26, 1942 to H. Carl and Louise Benton in Raleigh, NC. He graduated from Needham Broughton High School with the class of 1960. He married his high school sweetheart, Frances Moseley on July 22, 1961. After high school, Bill served his country for four years with the United States Navy. Upon returning to civilian life, Bill worked in medical sales. In 1978 Bill relocated his growing family and began a career in Hospital Administration at Roanoke Chowan Hospital. He later moved to Carteret General Hospital where he retired in 2005.

Bill Benton was Dale Earnhardt mixed with Bill Dance and multiplied by Clark Griswold. A lifelong motorsports fan, Earnhardt Sr was Bill’s hero. Whether practicing his two footed driving style on the interstate or negotiating with vendors and salesmen, Bill always sought to exude an Intimidator like aura. Bill was an avid sportsman and loved spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. Some of his favorite memories involved big game hunts in locations across the US and Canada with his son, Adam, and friends Roger Kilpatrick and Ed Pinnix. His home was filled with taxidermy displays and trophies of which he was very proud. However, Bill was first and foremost a family man. He cherished his wife and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always there to support and encourage, usually with a smile and a wink.

After retirement, Bill spent years caring for others. First, taking care of his mother as her health failed. Then, he was a constant presence by Adam’s side as he fought a courageous battle with ALS. He dedicated the last few years of his life to the daily care of his wife and held tight to her hand as she navigated through her journey with Alzheimer’s. Those left to mourn his passing find comfort in the fact that he is reunited with Frances and Adam, in a Heaven that, for him, no doubt resembles Alberta Canada.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Carl Benton. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Frances Moseley Benton, and his beloved son, William “Adam” Benton.

Left to cherish Bill’s memory are three daughters, Katherine Jones and husband Lawrence of Clayton, NC, Kristina Bracy and husband Bobby of Raleigh, NC, and Keri-Helen Arrington and husband Calvin of Garner, NC; nine grandchildren, Zachary Jones and wife April of Salt Lake City, UT, Ryan Bracy and wife Megan of Raleigh, NC, Kaitlin Johnson and husband Justin of Clayton, NC, Luke Bracy and wife Courtney of Raleigh, NC, Joshua Bracy of Raleigh, NC, Hunter Benton of Winton, NC, Holden Benton of Ahoskie, NC, Caleb Arrington and Eli Arrington of Garner, NC as well as eight great-grandchildren.

A private graveside service will be held Sunday, January 8, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Gardens in Ahoskie, NC. Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions can be made directly to the Jim “Catfish” Hunter ALS Foundation, attention Helen Hunter, PO Box 47, Hertford, NC 27944 or online by clicking here.

I worked at RCH for 10 years with Frances and Bill. Always taking care of business with a smile. So sorry about both, but at least they are together with Adam.

So, so sorry to hear of Bill’s passing. I worked at RCH and Bill had a great sense of humor, especially when he was around his partners-in-crime, Gary Kester and Jerome James. My deepest sympathy to the family. God bless you and keep you through this time of another loss to your family.

From our family to yours, sending love and heartfelt prayers. Our dads spoke often, retelling hunting and fishing stories. I have a feeling, heaven looks just like Bill wished it to.
