AULANDER, NC – William Charles “June Bug” Dunning, age 80, of Millennium Township, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at the Accordius Health at Creekside Care in Ahoskie, NC.

Bill was born on June 29, 1942 to the late William Claude Dunning, Jr. and Willie Dunn Dunning in Hertford County, NC. He was an oil truck driver for many years. He was a dedicated member of Oak Grove Baptist Church, Ahoskie Kiwanis Club, and Aulander Ruritan Club. Bill was a loving and devoted father and grandfather, affectionately called Big Daddy and BeBe by his grandchildren. He was an avid fan of NASCAR with his favorite driver being Richard Petty. Bill never met a stranger and loved working with his hands. Once he stopped driving the oil truck, he opened up a business that he owned and operated for 5 years, Bill’s Country Corner, in Connaritsa, then began working for Perdue building chicken houses. After that, he finally got to enjoy his time staying at home and would always have supper on the table when Nita got home from work. Bill was loved by many and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.

Bill is survived by his better half, Nita Rawls Morris of the home; his son, Sean Michael Dunning and wife Laura Hill Dunning of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Stephanie Lassiter and husband Robbie of Rich Square, NC; three grandchildren, William Charles Dunning, II, Allison Turner Dunning, and Chance Lewis Lassiter; and a sister, Bettie Dunning Lane and husband David of Hertford, NC.

The family will receive friends on Friday, October 7, 2022, from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, and other times at the home.

A celebration of life funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022, at 2:00 pm at the Oak Grove Baptist Church, with Pastor Greg Hurdle, and Pastor Bob Skeens officiating. Burial will follow at Job Cemetery.

I have just seen this! My heart is broken! “Mr. Bill” was such a huge part of my growing up, along with Alice, his former wife. Some of the best times I remember were with Bill and Alice, E.L. and Ada Holloman and my mom and dad. Wonderful times! “Mr. Bill” was one of the sweetest, funniest people I ever met, and he loved us girls. He made a fuss over us all the time. When he and Alice had Sean, we were all tickled to pieces! I saw him a few times over the years but he was hard to keep track of! I will always remember the times we all ate together, played music and cards and just hung out at each other’s houses. Memories to be cherished always. I am so saddened by his passing. God bless Sean and the rest of the family at this difficult time. “Mr. Bill” was a special person to me and always will be. My sincere condolences to all of his loved ones.

Bill was a long time friend of my Daddy. Growing up my family shared many good times with Bill and his family. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Sending prayers to his family.

I will always love you Bill Dunning.
So many fond memories of you my cousin , when I was a child staying summers with the family at the home place and visiting you all with my Daddy and Mama , especially of the hog killings and on many family times on weekends , and holidays.
Bettie, Sean, Nita and families — my thoughts and prayers are with you all during this most difficult time .
Love ,
