WINTON, NC – William Emmett “Billy” Matthews, Sr. of Mt. Tabor Church Road, died suddenly from a massive heart attack on Monday, December 11, 2023 at the age of 63. Billy was born on April 9, 1960 to Ola Ray Rawls Matthews and the late Alfred Ray Matthews, Sr. of Aulander, NC.

Billy made roofing his career, beginning as a teenager. He took so much pride in his work and everything he did he wanted it done just right. His goal was always perfection. He was a good man with a heart as big as all outdoors. He would always go that extra mile to help anyone in need. Billy’s greatest love was his family and fishing, then came wrestling, and football. He was a true-blue die-hard Kansas City Chiefs Fan his entire life. Billy Matthews was a gentle soul and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Besides his daddy, Billy was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, a sister, Julie Christal Matthews, and infant daughter, Jennifer Louise Matthews.

Left to cherish his loving memory is his mother, Ola Ray, his son, William Emmett Matthews, II of Aulander; two daughters, Kasey Dawn Matthews of Lenoir, NC, and Janeen Turner of Eure, NC; two brothers, Alfred Ray “Buck” Matthews Jr. (Rhonda) of Aulander, and Jeffrey Wayne Matthews of Edenton, NC; two sisters, Phyllis Matthews Coburn (Jeffrey Hunt) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jamie Lynn Matthews Liverman (James) of Aulander; four grandchildren, William E. “Will” Matthews, III of Severn, NC, Mickaylee and Logan Turner of Eure, NC, and Harley Dawn Matthews of Lenoir, NC. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 14, 2023 from 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm at Garrett-Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC

BB, I will miss you and always love you! Thank you for the 6 years that you spent time with me and loving me when I did not know where my daddy went. You made my tiny little mind happy with laughter, kindness, and love. I don’t understand why or how you are gone but I remember and smile when my mommy shows me pictures of you and she will always keep your memory alive to me and thank you for the time you came to see me and loved and laughed with me. You were a very wonderful God-Father to me and I as well as my family thank you for that. Love your other baby girl, Avery.

Another dear old friend gone away. The line gets shorter by the day. Tell all the rest they’re still loved and remembered, but being missed is what makes us tender. Rest in peace bill.

Uncle Billy, you were always the one to make us feel loved! Anytime you were headed to VA you never failed to call me and say I’m headed to your mama’s stop by and see me! I’ll never forget you! Rest easy and tell my dad I love and miss him everyday until we all meet again! I ❤️ you!
