William Jerry Burgess, born on December 5, 1947, peacefully passed away at the age of 75, on October 5, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family, He was born in Northampton County, North Carolina, and it was there that he took his final breath and bid farewell to this world.
Jerry, as he was affectionately known, spent many years working as a mechanic for Georgia Pacific and the Town of Conway. He was known for his exceptional skills and dedication to his craft. Outside of work, Jerry had a deep love for the outdoors, often spending his time hunting and fishing. He was a true outdoorsman, finding solace and joy in nature’s embrace.
Throughout his life, Jerry was a devoted family man. He was married to his beloved wife, Beverly, for an impressive 51 years. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Jerry was always present for his children’s and grandchildren’s ballgames and dance recitals, loudly cheering them on, even if he may not have fully understood the intricacies of the sport or performance. He would never miss an opportunity to sell his watermelons and pumpkins.
Jerry proudly served his country during the Vietnam era. He carried with him a sense of duty and honor that defined his character. His commitment to his family and his service to his country will forever be remembered.
In the memory of William Jerry Burgess, may his soul find eternal rest, and may his loved ones find solace in the cherished memories they shared with him.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father, Alvah Burgess, his mother, Gladys Vann Burgess, and his son, William Alan Burgess. He leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth, forever etched in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Surviving family members include his beloved wife, Beverly, his son Scott Burgess (David Michael) of Garner, NC, and his daughter-in-law, Michelle Burgess of Conway. He is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn Loyd of Chesapeake, VA, and Linda Knight (Larry) of Conway. Jerry was a proud grandfather to his granddaughter, Hayley Burgess Draper (Brent), and his grandson, Holden Alan Burgess, both of Conway. He had the joy of witnessing the arrival of his great-grandson, Waylan Draper. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends also mourn the loss of this remarkable man. Let us not forget his constant companion, his beloved dog, Sasy Burgess.
The services to honor Jerry’s life will be as follows: Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 7, 2023, from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm at Garrett-Sykes Memorial Chapel in Murfreesboro, NC. Funeral services will take place the next day, Sunday, October 8, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Conway Baptist Church in Conway, NC. Reverend Kevin Hanel will officiate the ceremony.

So sorry to hear of his passing. My husband (Dennis) and I worked with Jerry at GP for a few years before it closed. He was a nice man. Prayers for his family.
