Aulander – Wingate Rice Burden, Sr., age 85, of Aulander, died Monday, February 22, 2010, at his home with his loving wife by his side.

Mr. Burden was born in Bertie County on February 27, 1924, a son of the late Henry Moore Burden, Sr., and Lillie Belle Rice Burden. He was a member of Aulander Baptist Church and was a retired C.I.A. officer in Washington, DC. Wingate was an Army Air Force veteran of WWII and was a graduate of Spartans Aeronautics School in Tulsa, OK. He also attended American University in Washington, DC, the Armed Forces Extension College at the University of Chicago. Mr. Burden was also a member of the NC Democratic Club of Washington, DC, the NC State Society of Washington, DC and a Boy Scout Leader.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife Margaret Lowe Burden of the home. Two sons, Wingate R. ‘Chip’ Burden, Jr. and wife, Debbie and grandchildren Melissa Burden and Nick Burden of Kitty Hawk, NC, and James ‘Jim’ Burden and wife, Cindy and grandchildren Scott and Bradley Burden of Poquoson, VA; and loving nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life service will be conducted Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 2:00 PM in the Ashley Memorial Chapel at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Johnson officiating, with burial to follow in Aulander Cemetery.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home and other times at the home. Memorial donations may be made to Aulander Baptist Church.
